Urban Cattle
Urban Cattle
Inspired by the “uncanny valley effect" coined by Masahiro Mori in 1970 to describe the effects digital humans and robots have on people's emotions, this series features toy farm figurines in various portrait settings. The series Urban Cattle creates an uncanny valley effect for the viewer emphasizing the urban dweller's disconnection to the whole farm experience.
This series challenges the urban viewer to look at their relationship to cattle and farms and presents an opportunity to interpret the subjects from their personal experience as telling a story about either a storybook version of farm animals, fellow animals in our environment, or where our food comes from. These images are recognizable, not because of seeing them in their rural settings, but because of the familiarity with these as toys and figures played with as children, evoking one's earliest feelings and understanding of what a farm and our relationship to it is. This view of a farm and its animals triggers a real memory, layered beneath all the images and exposure of farms we have grown up with. Urban Cattle plays with an altered perspective of the subjects asking the viewer to question what is real?
Urban Cattle is an ongoing series.
